Runway Crossings
We recently experienced an unauthorized runway crossing here at KSAV. Fortunately there were no aircraft diverted with this incident but that doesn't lessen the seriousness of the occurrence.
All personnel should be reminded that airfield crossings are hazardous in nature and should be avoided. However, at times, crossings are unavoidable and extreme caution should be utilized by all involved.
A few reminders of safe airfield driving practices:
1) Read back all hold short instructions
2) Read back all runway crossing instructions
3) Report off of runway after crossing is complete
4) Insert your call sign into every transmission
5) Report clear of movement areas
6) Distractions should be avoided while driving on airfield such as phones, conversations, other radios, etc.
7) Deviation from ATCT instructions is prohibited

08/09/2012 SAV # 23 - 12 Updated

Recently within the FAA there have been several losses of separation due to opposite direction operations.  Effective immediately all opposite direction arrival operations involving any instrument flight rule (IFR) aircraft are temporarily suspended at Savannah airport until further advised.  Additionally all opposite direction departure operations involving any IFR aircraft are temporarily suspended at Savannah airport until further advised.   This will include an aircraft conducting a practice approach opposite direction.  All requests for opposite direction operations will not be approved. Exceptions to these  requirements are emergency aircraft and flight inspection aircraft.  We are currently working on procedures to all such operations in the future.

Update as of 8/16/12:

SAV ATCT has resumed Opposite Direction procedures.  There are tighter restrictions and SAV ATCT has the authority to approve or disapprove these operations.  When Opposite Direction operations are being conducted aircraft may experience delays for safety.   I would encourage pilots to use the active runways as advertised on the ATIS.

04/04/2011 SAV # 08 - 11
ATCT - SAV has issued  Letter to Airmen #11-1 and 11-2, which is attached for your review.  Please disseminate to all persons within your operation who may conduct operations in the airspace controlled by ATCT-SAV.
