The information below explains the Taxi Cab Fare System for trips from the airport to locations within the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport service area.
Maximum Meter Rates
As a condition of licensing by the city and operating within the city, all taxicab companies and drivers shall charge no more than the following schedule of fares for all trips originating or terminating within said city, except as otherwise provided.
- $3.23 for the first 1/6 of a mile.
- $0.54 per 1/6 of a mile thereafter, not to exceed $6.47 for the first mile and $2.69 per mile thereafter.
- The mileage component of the taxi fare structure shall be adjusted annually on March 1st of each calendar year based on the change in the Consumer Price Index of the prior calendar year.
- One dollar for each passenger in excess of one riding in the vehicle on the same trip.
- Waiting time charge is set at $25 per hour or portion thereof; $0.42 per minute for traffic delays.
- No charge for baggage that can be transported within interior and/or cargo area of the cab.
In the event two or more passengers enter the taxicab at the beginning of the trip and the destinations are not the same, all passengers shall pay a pro-rated portion of the fare metered. The passenger(s) whose destination is to a location other than the first stop will then add the fare computed on the meter for the remainder of the trip.
- A fuel surcharge shall be permitted when local gasoline prices reach certain levels as reported by the American Automobile Association (AAA). When local regular gasoline prices reach $3.50 a gallon, a $1.00 surcharge may be added to the fare, and when local regular gasoline prices reach $4.00 a gallon, a $2.00 surcharge may be added to the fare. This surcharge provision of the ordinance shall be reviewed annually by the MPSD director.
- The MPSD director shall have the authority to adopt special temporary rates and issue special temporary taxi permits during certain festivals to allow for the efficient transportation of festival goers and prevent overcharging.
Please note drivers have the flexibility in fares to be competitive with rideshare.
Notes: Sec. 6-1470. – Carrying more than one fare-paying passenger. After the original passenger agrees to allow other passengers to travel in the same taxicab, the taximeter will be reset after each passenger arrives at his or her destination and departs the taxicab. When the first passenger has been transported to his or her destination, the original fare is divided by the number of passengers in the taxicab and the first passenger will pay an equal portion of the fare. The taximeter will be reset and the next passenger transported to his or her destination. At such time, the fare shall be the amount on the taximeter plus the divided equal portion of the original fare. At the point of departure of the second passenger, the meter will be reset and this procedure shall continue until the taxicab is vacant.
