UPDATED:  At 8:56 PM on October 9, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport was notified that a general aviation aircraft had crashed on airport property. The aircraft, identified as a Piper Cherokee Arrow, tail number N9312N, was en route to Savannah after departing from Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport.

Airport Fire and Rescue, handled by the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard, responded to the crash and found the plane resting in a treeline, west of Runway 10. The pilot and one passenger were airlifted to a local hospital. The aircraft is registered to Blue Jay Aviation, LLC and was piloted by Robert J. Mayer, 64, of a Miami, Florida address.

The plane was cleared from the scene early Saturday morning, and the Federal Aviation Administration regional office is currently investigating the incident on behalf of the NTSB.
