SAVANNAH, GA – Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, along with various emergency agencies in the area, completed a full-scale airport emergency plan exercise on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. This full-scale exercise was conducted in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations that require an airport operator to conduct live drills on airport property every three years.
The exercise provided the opportunity for multiple agencies from throughout the region to work collectively with airport fire and rescue crews to enhance response skills for aviation mass casualty incidents. The emergency scenario simulated a commercial plane crash in a field southeast of airport runway 19 and included the use of the Georgia Air National Guard, 165th Airlift Wing Fire Department aircraft rescue fire training simulator. Response crews successfully completed the exercise in under two hours.
