Put the brakes on human trafficking

Spot the Signs: Help Stop Human Trafficking in Airports

What Is Human Trafficking?

Every year, millions of adults and children are held against their will and trafficked into forced labor and commercial sex. Human traffickers exploit roadways, railways, waterways, and airways in urban, rural, and Tribal communities across the United States to recruit and transport individuals being subjected to human trafficking.

As a traveler, you’re in a unique position to help fight human trafficking. Airports can be hotspots for trafficking, and staying alert to key signs can make a real difference.

What to Watch For:

  • Unusual Behavior: A person who seems anxious, afraid, or avoids eye contact. They may appear uncomfortable and overly controlled by someone they’re traveling with. Look for signs of physical abuse or malnourishment.
  • Traveling Minors: A minor who does not appear to be accompanied by their legitimate parent or guardian, or someone who Appears to be with a group of girls traveling with an older, unrelated adult.
  • Unaware of Travel Details: The individual doesn’t know their destination, flight information, or relies entirely on someone else for travel details. They may also share inconsistent or contradictory details about their travel plans or purpose.
  • Inappropriate Attire or Belongings: Dressing in a way that is not suitable for the weather or destination. Traveling with very little luggage or no personal items at all.

Why It Matters:

By recognizing and reporting suspicious activity, you could help someone in need. If something feels off, trust your instincts!

With an estimated 27.6 million victims globally, traffickers often use transportation hubs, including airports, to move or exploit individuals. In 2023, nearly 10,000 potential trafficking cases were reported in the U.S. alone.

How to Take Action:

If you notice something suspicious, report it to airport staff or law enforcement. By being vigilant and informed, you’re not just a traveler—you’re part of the fight against human trafficking. Together, we can make the skies safer for everyone.
